August 2001 Newsletter

Thank you volunteers!

Gaines Hoff has been a volunteer, working the Pro Shop counter during Thursday Ladies’ League for the past several years. Gaines is just one more example of the many volunteers who continue to support our club with their tireless efforts. Gaines, we owe you and probably many others, an overdue thank you!

Why should I do Volunteer Work at this “For Profit” Country Club?
Asking for Volunteers at the club has become a bit more complicated since we switched from an “Not For Profit” to a “For Profit” Limited Liability Corporation. Just the title of this type of organization sounds to many Members like a bunch of eager investors are expecting to make a lot of money from investing in this Country Club. It is easy to see why one could say to himself, “Why should I do volunteer work that will just benefit the investors”.
While I am sure the investors expect a modest return on their investment, the primary reason people invested in the Theodosia Country Club, LLC was because they wanted to see this golf course remain viable and succeed. The club needed the money these investors brought forth, in order to pay off debt owed by the club. And it needed the new corporate structure to allow more flexibility in the management of the club.
We have at our club a complex combination of people who get paid for the work they do for the club, and others who do a lot of work and never get paid a cent. If we could afford to pay all of you who do work for the club, we would love to do just that. But, the plain and simple fact is that at the present time we cannot afford to do so. Possibly some day in the future, if the membership grows significantly, this will not be the case. So if you are one of those hard workers who contribute your efforts and are never financially compensated, please accept our sincere thank you. We need you. At this time, the club would not be financially viable without this generous volunteerism.
To those of you who have paid for memberships even though you don’t golf much, who have donated trees and flowers, who have donated cash and items for the garage sales, worked at the garage sales, who have provided financial sponsorship of tournaments, who paid for advertisements on our score cards, who volunteer to work the counter at the pro shop, who occasionally help with the grass, greens, sand trap, leaves and trees limbs, who run tournaments, run leagues, do miscellaneous maintenance around the course and the building, help pour the concrete cart paths, serve on committees, and serve as officers, and for anyone we missed in this list; we offer our sincerest gratitude. We appreciate your helping us to keep the doors open. We really can’t do it without you!!!

Exercise Group to Begin
Want to join them?
It might be good for you!!

There is a group of members who are starting an Aerobics Exercise Group at the Club. This is still in the planning stages, so we don’t have details, but the general plan is that the group will meet a couple of times per week and use Aerobics VCR tapes for exercising. A TV and a VCR have been donated to the club to be used for this purpose.
The group will collect a modest donation at each session. The funds collected will be shared with the Club for expenses and also used for equipment upkeep and to build an exercise tape library.
As soon as details are available we will publish in the newsletter. For any members who would like to start with the group right away, please contact Rita Nichols.

Hole #3 has continued to be assaulted with eagles.
Mike Thomas, new member from Kissee Mills, scored an eagle on #3 during Men’s League in June. It didn’t take Mike long as a member to show us his stuff. Congratulations Mike!
And now for the other amazing news. Warren Herchenroeder scored his first ever eagle August 6th on #3. He was very proud. He then followed up the next day with a “bucket in one” on #8 when his tee shot landed in one of the buckets used to water the new trees by #8 green. Congratulations on both of these amazing shots Warren!

New Ladies’ Tees
The feedback on the new Ladies’ Tees had been very positive. Thanks to Alan, the zoysia has really taken hold on these new tees. The ladies seem to be pleased that the course is now a bit more female friendly.

Crab Grass and Fungus
You may have noticed some large areas of dead grass on a couple of fairways that were being invaded by crab grass. Also a few places on some of the greens where fungus was trying to take hold. Alan has had to eliminate the bad stuff and try to get the good stuff growing again in these places. Be patient, the end result will be worth the wait.

Club Policy
It is against Club Policy for players to bring their own beer onto the course. Beer is for sale in the Club House. If you want to take beer on the course, it may be purchased at the Club House. There are prices for 6 pack quantities and ice for your coolers if desired. The Club also has a small supply of coolers for loan during play. Please help us by adhering to Club Policies. Thank You.

Learning Center Volunteer?
Do you remember how intimidating the game of golf was when you first started to play? Would you have liked to have a resource to help you learn about the game? No, we don’t have a “Learning Center” yet. We are looking for a person who would be willing to organize and monitor a new “Learning Center” for the Club. The intent of the Learning Center would be to provide a focal point of information and assistance to enable members and newcomers to learn more about the game. The Learning Center would be located somewhere in the Clubhouse, probably in the Pro Shop.
It could contain such items as:.
- TCC Informational Bulletin.
- Brochures for sale on the basics of the game and its rules and etiquette.
- Golf improvement videos and books for sale or rent.
- Sign up for lessons.
- And other resources geared toward the new golfer or those wishing to learn more or improve their game.

We believe this Center, if implemented, could help significantly in the education, involvement, and retention of new members. If you be interested in helping to launch this concept for our Club, please contact Ron Beard.
